Black Screen Issue in Google Chrome & Firefox

Recently, I started to experience very annoying black screens in Google Chrome browser. It mostly happens on ad-filled web pages. Programmatic ads, video popups, etc. They are very irritating and then experience performance issues with Chrome, which is extra frustrating.

I'm sharing my experience as I suspect I will not be the only one. Below are some tips to debug the problem and solve it. I hope this helps. In my case, I suspect it was the video drivers on my PC, I updated them, and it went away.

Causes of the Black Screen Issue in Google Chrome

  1. Graphics Card Issue: Problems with the graphics card, such as outdated drivers or compatibility issues with Chrome, can lead to a black screen.
  2. Corrupted User Profile: Chrome's user profiles store data like browsing history and cookies. Corruption in these profiles can trigger the black screen issue.
  3. Conflicting Browser Extensions: Extensions enhance Chrome's functionality, but conflicts can lead to display issues like a black screen.
  4. Outdated Chrome Version: Using an outdated version of Chrome might lead to compatibility problems with your system, resulting in a black screen.

Solutions to Fix the Black Screen Issue

  1. Restart Chrome: A simple browser restart can often resolve the black screen issue.
  2. Disable Hardware Acceleration: This feature uses your computer's graphics card for better performance but can cause issues. Please turn it off in Chrome settings (Settings > Advanced > System > Use hardware acceleration when available).
  3. Clear Browsing Data: Clearing cookies, cache, and other browsing data can resolve issues arising from corrupted user profiles. This can be done in Chrome settings (Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data).
  4. Disable Conflicting Extensions: Turn off extensions in Chrome (Settings > Extensions) one by one to identify and resolve any conflicts.
  5. Update Chrome: Ensure Chrome is updated to the latest version for optimal compatibility and performance (Settings > About Chrome).
By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the black screen issue in Google Chrome and enhance your browsing experience.
